Recycling at the Beach

Recycling bins are found in all of Gibraltar’s beaches. The bins are serviced on a regular basis and beach users are reminded that additional, larger recycling bins as well as general waste bins are also available on all beaches, should the smaller units be full. This forms part of the Department of the Environment, Heritage & Climate Change’s strategy to increase recycling rates and also reduce littering on beaches. Litter on beaches is a significant environmental problem. It can cause injuries to people on land and, if blown into the sea, becomes marine litter. Marine litter is one of the deadliest killers of marine wildlife, the largest polluter of our oceans and the quietest growing threat to human health.

Each recycling unit contains 4 bins:

  • Yellow: for plastics, cans and tetra brik containers
  • Green: for glass
  • Blue: for paper & cardboard
  • Black: for other general waste

NEMO APP

Nemo is a reporting platform which gives you up-to-date information on what’s happening on the beaches and elsewhere along the coastline, as users report their findings. It has a visual, tile based system, which makes identifying your sightings as easy as possible even if you are just getting into Marine Biology.
